This lugged classic bike was a present from Sam’s wife for his 40th birthday (I heard on the grapevine this was in exchange for a vintage Rolex)! I first started to talk to Sam about his bike in 2013. He has a fascination with Italian built old lugged frames and was after a steel lugged frame with a horizontal top tube that he could run modern components on. After going back and forth with different lug designs, Sam allowed us to have free reign with the design of the lugs. I hand carved the head tube lugs as I wanted something to represent a modern bike; and we created a very angular design on the lugs which reminded him of the BMW i Series. The fork was made from stainless steel and we used Reynolds 953 for the fork blades which we left exposed. For the head tube we used Reynolds 953 which we left brushed. The rest of the frame was made from a mixture of Columbus Life and Reynolds 953. We built the stem in-house so it would run in the same line as the top tube. No expense was spared with the components to compliment the frame, where we used a Campagnolo Super Record group set with Royce hubs laced onto the Ambrosio Excellence rims. It was wonderful to have the trust of Sam to go ahead with the overall design of the bike, and I can’t thank him enough for the patience he gave me whilst doing this.
