Campbell holds a carbon racing bike and a winter bike in his portfolio, but he wanted a stainless steel Saffron as his ‘bike for life’. A bike just for ‘Sunday best’, to complete the collection. His youth doesn’t detract from his fanaticism for bicycles and Campbell knows a thing or two about bikes. He travelled all the way down from Edinburgh to build up his bike in the workshop before we took the photographs.
The frame is all stainless steel, and is built from a combination of Columbus and Reynolds tubesets. We have Columbus XCR oversized tubes in the front and Reynolds 953 at the rear end. The 953 contributes to the stiff rear end, but I put in a chainstay bridge to heighten that rigidity even further.
For an added bit of comfort we added a shim into the seat tube and stuck in a 27.2mm seat post for extra flexibility on some of the bumpier Scottish roads.
The 44mm head tube is custom machined 17/4 stainless steel, made by Ted James.
We finished the bike with a Campagnolo Super Record 2015 groupset and Campagnolo Bora Ultra wheels, with a mix of 3T and Enve finishing kit. and some beautiful FMB handmade tyres.
